Driving soon after you have just received your driver license can prove challenging if you are not fully prepared and confident in your abilities as a driver. Regarding this matter, in many driving academies their main focus during a advanced driving course is to teach students to early identify potential hazards they may encounter while behind the steering wheel.

Being able to anticipate certain dangers will help you prevent potential car accidents. In some areas drivers are even asked to pass a hazard recognition test before they are allowed to drive. During this test, the student is asked to identify, in a number of clips, potential dangers.

Here is a small, but concise list of potential threats you can come upon:

  • Watch for special road signs that signal potential problems
  • Adapt your speed if there are animals, children or old people close to the road
  • Be careful if cyclist of motorbikes are present
  • Pull over if you notice emergency cars like ambulances and fire trucks
  • Adapt your speed when driving under low visibility conditions
  • Be careful to notice if there is ice or water on the road
  • Pay special attention to bends or when changing lanes
  • Watch for cars pulling out of garages-they have low visibility
  • Reduce speed if there are cars in front of you which want to park
  • Look out for oncoming traffic-watch their direction of movement
  • Respect traffic speed limits and restrictions
  • Near residential areas be careful with children playing ball games
  • Use extreme caution on single lane roads and for the presence of farm traffic
  • Be careful if you notice farm animal on the road
  • Pay attention to objects and obstacles: piles of mud, holes and sewers
  • Watch out for road works
  • Break in advance if you notice cars that have broke down
  • Adapt your speed if cars try to overtake you.
